Lesson 7: Zotero - Web research assistant

Zotero - Web research assistant

Think
(e-Portfolio)

1. Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) when you needed to collect, manage, and keep a record of citation details of your Web research? How effective do you think these information management strategies were?

I use Google to collect. When I manage and
keep a record of citation details of your Web research, I use copy and paste.

I do not think it is the best way, however I do not know any another way.

2. In your view, what kinds of things would you want a Web research tool to be able to do?

I want some tool to make a file that have all necessary information automatically when I find information on web.

Explore
(e-Portfolio)

It is easy to learn a new way to collect, manage, and cite your research sources. The video that follows explains more about Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Watch it a few times, stop and start it at critical points, take some notes. Try to identify a few things about using Zotero that could make studying easier for you. In the Zotero Quick Start Guide, under 'Introductory Screencasts', please watch 1) ztour, & 2) zdemo.
Zotero is a tool to get and manage digital information efficiently. We can use digital information as if it is analog one.

Do (ROW)

1. Have a partner. Each of you should learn to use Zotero to do two of the following things:

a) Take notes on sources

b) Tag or classify sources

c) Export an MLA formatted bibliography of sources

d) Highlight and annotate sources

2. Watch the screencasts that describe how to complete the tasks you have selected to learn. Master each task: please practice until you feel confident in your skills and understanding.

3.
(e-Portfolio) During practice make brief notes that you can use to help you teach your partner what to do and how to do it.

4. You should now be ready to teach your partner what you have learned.

Explain (e-Portfolio)

Write a post reflecting on Zotero with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use Zotero?
That is to understand about how to use Zotero clearly. It's so useful however little difficult to use perfectly.

2. What are the affordances of Zotero (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
We can use digital sources like analog one. If we do not care about time to use it perfectly, I suppose there is no complaint.

3. How can Zotero be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

We can use information without print off so we do not have to use many tools to get and manage information. There is a computer, it is OK.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about Zotero that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

The skill that make work sites easily and underli
ne in digital source are useful.

manually add an item

add this web page to your collection

add a link to this web page (this is like a bookmark, unlike adding the web page as a full item using , which can accept full citation information, multiple notes, and attachments)

take a snapshot of the current web page (snapshots can be dragged and dropped into any folder or item)

perform advanced searches

add a stand-alone note

note

book

journal article

newspaper article

film

file

link to a file

link to a web page

snapshot of a web page

these are just the most popular item types; other icons, for artwork, audio, etc. will appear if they are added to your library

lesson6 explain

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write
a
post reflecting on GDS with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use GDS?
The main skills are same as Ward.

2. What are the affordances of GDS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
We can share information so easy.

3. How can GDS be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

when we have to do collaborative work, it can be the easiest tool to share information.

lesson6

Think
I have a meeting when I have to collaborate with other students. It is not easy to organize times to meet sometimes.

Explore
1We can share documents easy without to make any copies.
2We can share documents with limited people.
3We can use not only words but also spreadsheet, graph and so on.

Lesson4

Think
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to save your favourite web pages? What provisions do you make to be able to access them whenever and wherever you need them?

I use bookmark in my browser when I use my own PC.

Do
1. How to use Delicious. Take some time to view a couple of these presentations on Delicious (easiest first, more detailed last). Please focus on identifying what you already know, as well as two or three things that you did not know, which may make studying easier for you. You should take some notes.

We can make a list of favorite sites with tag. Tag helps to search similar sites.
I cannot understand enough about recommend tag.

Explain
Write a post reflecting on social bookmarking with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use Delicious?

It is to infer that what tag is appropriate.

2. What are the affordances of social bookmarking (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?

We can get information what we need easily. However, not every site are so good because many people choose sites.

3. How can Delicious be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about social bookmarking that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

It is to infer that what tag is appropriate.

Lesson3 Blog as e-Portfolio

Think
For example, I prepared “traditional” resume when applied for part time job.

Explore

1.I need an e-portfolio because it is useful. I can be cleared what I can and it can rewrite whenever.
2.A traditional resume has traditional format so we can certainly get some kind of basically information. However sometimes it is abstract. In this point, e-portfolio has not only basically information but also more particular information.

Explain
Write a post reflecting on your blog as an e-Portfolio with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use your e-Portfolio?

To know what is e-Portfolio.

3. How can your e-Portfolio be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

4. What skills and understandings have you learned from creating your e-Portfolio that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

Lesson2 Browser as PLE

Think
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to try and ensure that you could do any work you wanted to do during the day?

I did not do any special device.

Explore
View a couple of these screenshot tours 1 2 3 4 showing how different users have developed a personal work environment in Firefox (FF). Most users have provided details on what extensions or tweaks they've made to develop their browser as a personal work environment. Take notes on some of the features that look interesting.

I think it is risky under some circumstances that to add so many tools to our FF. Some FF users use over 7 or 8 tools for FF so their browser is too useful not to work on without FF. I do not want to think about what they can do when their browser is wrong with.

Explain
Write a post reflecting on this early version your PLE (Firefox on a USB drive & the add-ons) with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.

1. What are the main skills needed to use your PLE?

It is to know about how to use add-on systems.

2. What are the affordances of your PLE (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
It is useful that I can use my own customized FF any PC. A disadvantage (but it is inevitable) is that FF for Windows works in Windows only.

3. How can your PLE be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
I can get information more easily than before to use social bookmark (Delicious) because of tag.

4.
What skills and understandings have you learned from creating a PLE that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
It is important to choose tools what I need.

Think
1. I know G-Mali, YouTube and Wikipedia. I think social software is a cluster of information that everyone can use and sand it. I suppose that "everyone can use send it for free" make social software social.
2. I think social network is a system to shear information. It can be social because of that everyone can join it.

Explore
For example, many companies or factories have their own web sites and send information about their commodities and policies.
I think a keyword of social network is hidden, visible relationship.

I was surprised that "today's learners will have 10 to 14 jobs by their 38th birthday." It cannot think that situation becomes real. "More than 50% of U.S. 21-yaers-olds have created content on the web." and "There were more than 2,700,000,000 searches performed on Google this month." are also surprising for me. We are heavy user of web however I think ma
ny people cannot realize that until it show in figure.

Do
Social software is a program to use and send information.
Social network is system to shear information.
I would like to study social networks by running own web site or blog. I think to choose information and respond to user are good way of learn about that.
